Overview
The Urban Pre-College Education Network, Inc. (UPCEN, Inc.) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit incorporated organization. We provide valuable resources including college tours, education forum and fair information, scholarship listings and free bi-monthly workshops to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.
Mission
UPCEN’s mission is to provide a means of preparing the under-served population of minority high school students for a successful college experience. The program is offered to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors as a college preparatory program.
About the Founder
Who is Attorney Melvyn R. Burrow (Brother Kariuki) Certified Public Accountant?
Melvyn grew up in Brooklyn New York. He’s the oldest of three children and was a very successful baseball player in both high school and college. He was born to a single parent and never met his father. After the loss of his mother to lung cancer at the early age of 40, Melvyn was left to raise his younger brother James who was only seven years old at the time. He was President of the student body in high school and Vice President of the Organization of Black Collegians at Hofstra University. Attorney Burrow received his BBA from Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York in 1982 where he was listed in Who’s Who among American Colleges and Universities. He earned his Juris Doctorate Degree in 1992 with honors from Atlanta Law School in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also licensed State of Georgia as a Certified Public Accountant. His perseverance enabled him to take both the CPA and Bar exam five times until he achieved his objective. Attorney Burrow, moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1987 from Brooklyn, New York. He has been in private practice since 1992 as a CPA and since 1999 as an Attorney. Before starting his practice here in Atlanta, he was employed in New York with Citicorp North American Finance Group, Solomon Brothers Investment Bankers, and Peat Marwick Mitchell Certified Public Accountants. Melvyn is now an experienced practitioner in the areas of Income Tax Preparation, Personal Injury, Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, Incorporations, IRS Offer in Compromise, and Estate Planning. He has also been admitted to practice law by the United States District Court, the Supreme Court of Georgia, the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Superior Court of Georgia. His professional memberships include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants, American Bar Association, Georgia Bar Association and Atlanta Bar Association. Attorney Burrow participates in and has founded several community-based programs geared toward the development and empowerment of youth, with a focus on young black males. In addition to volunteering for Junior Achievement, he serves as coordinator for The Urban Pre-College Education Network, Let Us Make Man, and The Male Action Coalition Mentoring Program for the Pan African Orthodox Christian Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Although his time is very limited, he remains dedicated to the precepts of his heroes...Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey and W.E.B Dubois. He maintains a passion for educating young black males. Melvyn’s hobbies are listening to Mainstream Jazz Music, Swimming, and Tai Chi. |

DID YOU KNOW?“For many of our UPCEN students, they are the first generation in their families to attend college.”Last year, The Urban Pre-College Education Network, Inc.’s (UPCEN) annual college tour trip took place at Georgia Southern University on Saturday April 7, 2018. The cost of the trip was $35. If you would like your child or student to participate in our next College Tour, please contact us.
